ENHAM KILIMANJARO CHALLENGE

enham

Background

Enham is a charity which seeks to give disabled people opportunities to make real choices for a fulfilling and successful life.

In July 2008 Enham organised a challenge for 6 disabled climbers and their non-disabled buddies, with a support team of guides and doctors to climb Mt,. Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in Africa. The objective was to raise both awareness and money for Enham.

Our Role

We formed part of the project team to devise and manage the communications strategy. We wanted to ensure that no disabled participant was exploited for media coverage, and that appropriate language was used in all communications at all times.

We supported the challenge by providing a 24 hour communications support and by developing crisis and issues management guidelines.

We arranged a premiere of ‘The Mountain Within’ a specially produced and independently filmed record of the challenge.(Click for video)

What else did we do?

We were required to support every fund raising initiative by both raising the profile of the Challenge and the individual events through the local media. We developed a matrix of key local media around each participant and a template release which we used to issue a regular flow of press releases.

We contacted the local television station, Meridien, and negotiated exclusive broadcast coverage of each element of the challenge, and provided broadcast quality footage from our own film crew.

We organised a number of local media events such as the fitting out of the participants at Blacks, one of the Challenge sponsors.

We provided pr guidelines and media training on the Challenge for all participants and for sponsors.
